The Samsung Galaxy Alpha is obviously feeling the pressure due to the approaching iPhone 6. The Samsung launches a phone with design chops that will impress even though the most seasoned Apple fan was a shrewd move by the company.

I was tried to get my hands on the Samsung Galaxy Alpha at IFA 2014 and smitten by its look and feel. The whole design of the handset is interposed by premium.

The chassis looks super slim. The metal frame is same as that of the Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

It provides wafer thin feels in the hand. Its specs show at just 6.7mm thin. The Galaxy Alpha defeats the Samsung Galaxy S5 (8.1mm) and iPhone 5S (7.6mm) with room to spare.

Design and layout

The design and layout will be quite thin enough to feel brittle. The metal frame is sturdy enough with absolutely no flex when using. The Samsung is made of polycarbonate at back part.

An all-metal unibody chassis rather than just around the rim without dent the ‘wow’ factor. The Samsung Galaxy Alpha is heavier than its current featherlight 115g weight.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is removable. The Samsung Galaxy S5includes a MicroSD card slot, so you will have to just stick with the 32GB of on board storage.

The Samsung phones will also be familiar with the Alpha’s button layout. This Samsung phones are same as the Galaxy S5, with the lozenge shaped home button that is fixed at center part on the bottom of the device, and flanked by the tab and back hotkeys.

Screen

The premium look of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha is unfortunately not matched when it comes to the screen. Samsung is decided to attached a 720p screen on the device with little disappointment.

A 4.7-inch Super AMOLED screen is fixed on board. The Samsung Galaxy Alpha boasts a resolution of 1280 x 720.

This resolution is significantly lower than the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the iPhone 5S. But as it is Super AMOLED at least colours ping like they should.

Performance

The power performance of the screen on the Galaxy Alpha is a real treat. Screen swipes zip at a quick pace and jumping between apps using the tab hotkey with effortless. This is all happens by using the 2.5GHz quad-core chip.

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha launches in Asia, and includes an octa-core chip. This Samsung Galaxy Alpha will be blisteringly quick, and gives the quad-core version glides like a knife through butter.

The Galaxy Alpha has 2GB of RAM, so that user will hesitate to use games because they will make problems when using the phone for some downtime.

The results of the camera are impressive. The 12MP camera is fixed on the rear of the board and a 2.1MP on the front of the board. This camera is better than the Galaxy S5.

The clarity in the images captured was superb and like the S5 you can have a shortcut to the camera straight from the lockscreen.

Entire modes expect from Samsung’s camera are fixed on board, adopting HDR, Dual Camera, Beauty Face and Panorama. The user can shoot 4K video to playback on any compatible television.

All the software quirks you find on the S5 and the Galaxy Alpha. It has the same TouchWiz interface on board and Android 4.4.

The TouchWiz has a vanilla Android version of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha – an OS as clean as its design would certainly levitate the phone in my eyes.

Early verdict

After a short time with the Samsung Galaxy Alpha, it has that there is a lot to like about the device. If you can excuse its screen shortcomings and the lack of expandable memory, what you are left with is a beautifully designed phone that is provided with the likes of the HTC One (M8) and the iPhone 5S.

The handset that proves Samsung is pushing the boat out with its style. It’s design flourishes have a lot in common with the recently declared Samsung Galaxy Note 4 that points to more design additions to come in future handsets.
